Basically put the Groups button back, and had the Friends and Groups buttons (menu items and short cut keys), open the Friend and Group list is seperate windows independently from the Communicate window.

> Well, that was about three months ago - no such approach has made it into any release/RC/FL client from LL (as far as I've seen). In the meantime there have been a number of alternative patches/approaches and there are at least three third party solutions out there which revert in varying degrees to the pre 1.18 behaviour (Nicholaz, Cool SL Browser and On Rez). So I think it time to re-open this as suggested above.
> Incidentally I've also posted a suggested rearrangement of the tabs in Communicate window http://jira.secondlife.com/browse/VWR-3265 namely to have the IM tabs vertical rather than horizontal so that a narrow and long window can deal with both long friend lists and a large number of concurrent IMs (there is a screenshot on the jira entry).
I also linked this bug to VWR-1678 and VWR-1550 for which I already uploaded patches.
