Simplified SLurls to promote wider use
--------------------------------------

                 Key: SVC-5013
                 URL: http://jira.secondlife.com/browse/SVC-5013
Project: 2. Second Life Service - SVC
          Issue Type: New Feature
          Components: Teleport
    Affects Versions: 1.30 Server
         Environment: All
            Reporter: Honey Fairweather

SLurls should be simply memorable as are well-formed web URLs - so that if you read a URL you should be able to keep it in memory in order to be able to type it directly into SL. If Viewer 2.0 contains an SLurl location bar (as suggested by M Linden(1)), and if the current SLurl form remains then this becomes even more critical.

Humans can't reliable remember 3 3-digit or more numbers from one location to the next, and thus SLurls as they stand aren't generally memorable and are very rarely typed in directly, although URLs on the web are (along with copy/paste and bookmarks).

This proposal suggests that rather than re-inventing SLurls (and rendering landmarks, webpages, scripts obsolete), an abstracted layer be laid on top which allows a landowner to give a virtual name to a set of three XYZ coordinates.
E.g.

http://slurl.com/secondlife/Amicitia/33/105/786, and
http://slurl.com/secondlife/Amicitia/snow

would go to the same place. Effectively the landowner would be tying names to specific XYZ locations in the region in a way where the names can be used directly in SLurls.

An analogy would be DNS of course, as SLurls currently contain digits and the proposal makes them memorable to humans.
The web already can use words rather than digits for page locations which is a step up from SLurls, but a further analogy for this is the ability of a web developer to create an alias for a web page location, e.g.

http://www.website.com/info/docs/procedure/legal/section 2.1/ as
http://www.website.com/copyright

These aliases to XYZ coordinates should be called something memorable, e.g. signposts, stages, busstops, landpoints.

It's unclear whether the setting up of these virtual aliases should be restricted to estate managers or could be granted to parcel owners too - the latter would be ideal. This would involve some mechanism to ensure people don't pick duplicate names, of course.

I assume this may involve substantial technical changes, which I'm purposefully ignoring here; the point of this jira is to propose a mechanism to make SLurls as useful and widely used as URLs on the web.
