With the right sound card under Windows, Audacity can be set up to record 'what I hear' (the exact terms may vary according to sound card) - this works fine for me, grabbing anything that goes in from my mic, to the output from my speakers, as you describe.

The need here is a little different than just recording into Audacity
(which I use and love on Mac and PC) -- Audacity has specific input
channels (microphone, line in, etc).
What the software I use does something different- it can record BOTH
any audio input (e.g. me speaking into say Second Life's voice
client, or my mike input) AND any audio output from any application
(the sound coming out of my speakers is recorded at the same time).
Unless your PC has some software set up to do some mixing of inputs
(and my limited use of PCs may be an issue), I don't see how Audacity
can record multiple audio channels. Unless you are just setting up a
microphone to record both your voice and the sound coming out of the
