Vidya,
this is exactly the goal of the Kuurian Expedition group in SL.  See
http://swi.indiana.edu/exploration.htm for example.   Many of our
group members are researchers and educators who I think would be very
interested in these types of activities.
If you're interested in organizing something as part of K.E. that
would be great! If you prefer to remain independent, I hope you still
let us tag along!
